About this tool
Convert raster images between JPG, PNG and WebP without uploading them. Choose JPG for broad photographic compatibility, PNG for lossless pixels and transparency, or WebP for efficient modern delivery. Format conversion cannot restore detail already lost, and transparent pixels must be flattened when exporting to JPG.
How to use Image Converter
Add supported formats
Select JPG, PNG or WebP originals. For HEIC input, use the separate HEIC to JPG tool first.
Choose the output
Select JPG, PNG or WebP. When exporting transparent input to JPG, pick a background color; set quality for JPG or WebP.
Verify the new format
Choose Convert Images and download the result. Open it to check color and transparency instead of relying on the filename alone.
When should you use this tool?
- Making WebP usable in a JPG-only workflow
- Preserving transparency with PNG or WebP
- Preparing modern web assets
- Standardizing a mixed batch of supported images
Example: send a transparent logo to a JPG-only service
A 1200 × 900 PNG logo has transparent corners. The receiving service accepts only JPG on a white page. Merely renaming the PNG to .jpg will not make it a JPEG.
- Choose JPG output and a white background. Keep the PNG master because JPG cannot retain transparent corners.
- Convert once, download and inspect edges against the intended page color. Semi-transparent shadows blend with the selected background.
- If the destination later needs a dark theme or transparent overlay, return to the PNG original; do not try to remove the white background from the JPG export.
Why flattening changes edge colors
Conceptually, each composited color channel combines foreground and background according to opacity: output = alpha × foreground + (1 − alpha) × background. At alpha 0, the background shows completely; at alpha 1, the foreground does. Browser color handling and JPEG encoding can affect the final channel values. PNG or WebP can retain alpha; a JPEG export cannot.
| Conversion | Useful for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| WebP → JPG | A photo upload that rejects WebP | Lossy encoding; transparency is flattened |
| JPG → PNG | A lossless-encoded working copy | Cannot restore lost detail; may be larger |
| PNG → WebP | A transparent web asset | Compare detail and bytes; no explicit lossless WebP switch |
Common mistakes to avoid
- JPEG and JPG are names for the same format, not different quality levels.
- A WebP file can be animated, but this tool produces a still image, not an animation-preserving conversion.
- Do not assume metadata, color profiles or edit history survive browser rasterization.
Accuracy and limits
JPG, PNG and WebP only in this tool; use the separate HEIC converter for supported HEIC photos. Vector SVG, GIF animation and arbitrary HEIF variants are outside this workflow. Files are decoded and re-encoded by the browser, so byte-for-byte and metadata preservation are not promised.
Convert between browser formats
Convert JPG to PNG or WebP, PNG to JPG or WebP, and WebP to JPG or PNG. HEIC remains isolated in its dedicated converter.
Transparency is explicit
PNG and WebP can preserve transparent pixels. JPG cannot, so transparent areas are flattened against the selected background color.
Private batch conversion
Each image is decoded and encoded locally. A failed file does not stop the rest of the batch, and successful results can be downloaded together.

Private browser-based processing
Your files are decoded and encoded locally in the browser. ConvertHop does not upload image contents, filenames, previews, EXIF or GPS data to a conversion service. Analytics and advertising remain disabled.

Frequently asked questions
Which conversions are supported?
JPG, PNG and WebP can each be converted to either of the other two formats.
What happens to transparency in JPG?
JPG cannot store transparency. Transparent areas are flattened against the background color you select, which defaults to white.
Can this convert HEIC?
HEIC uses a dedicated decoder and remains available through the separate HEIC to JPG Converter.
Will an animated WebP stay animated?
No. This browser raster workflow exports a still image, not a preserved animation. Keep the original animation and use an animation-specific editor for that task.
Does JPG to PNG restore quality?
No. PNG prevents further lossy encoding, but cannot restore detail already discarded from a JPG.
