Example: a phone photo for a JPG-only application
You have a 4032 × 3024 HEIC camera photo and a form accepts JPEG only. Start with format conversion; do not resize it just because the form rejects HEIC.
- Keep the original HEIC. Choose a high JPG quality for the first export and download the JPEG copy.
- Open the download and check orientation, colors and the full image. A portrait photo’s displayed width and height can reflect orientation handling.
- If the form also has a byte cap, send the new JPG to Reduce Image Size. If it specifies dimensions, resize it first and re-check the byte size after the final export.
Conversion is decoding and encoding, not a size formula
The decoder reads the supported main still image; the JPEG encoder writes new compressed image data. There is no fixed HEIC-to-JPG byte ratio. A 4032 × 3024 image has 12,192,768 pixels regardless of whether the stored file is HEIC or JPG. JPEG quality changes encoding, not the requested pixel count, and 100 does not make the conversion lossless.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Renaming a JPG to .heic is not a valid HEIC test.
- A rejected .heif variant is not fixed by changing its extension to .heic.
- A ZIP download collects successful conversions; it cannot repair failed source files.
Accuracy and limits
HEIC support depends on the actual codec/container variant. This is not a broad HEIF converter. Corrupt files or memory-heavy photos can fail. Additional frames, HDR behavior, EXIF/GPS and Live Photo video are not archival guarantees; preserve the source for those uses.

What the JPG will contain
The converter creates the main still image at its original pixel dimensions without upscaling. If transparency exists, it is flattened against white because JPEG does not support transparency.
HEIC-specific information may not survive: Live Photo video, depth maps, additional frames, HDR information, some color information, EXIF and location metadata, and editing history can be removed.
Limitations
- Not every HEIC variant can be guaranteed to decode.
- Very large photos may exceed the memory available to the browser.
- JPG conversion is lossy, even at high quality.
- Metadata and Live Photo video are not preserved.
- Browser capabilities and memory limits vary by device.
